Something about Celeste

Original Storyline

Written and drawn in 1999

I wrote this storyline during my time in college when I wrote a comic strip for the student newspaper. It was inspired by the ‘Calvin & Hobbes’ in which Calvin made a duplicator. I thought it would be fun for Celeste to have an evil alter-ego. When I fist drew Ƨɘlɘƨ I just flipped the image of Celeste. Now I draw Ƨɘlɘƨ from scratch, with minor details that are different than my drawings of Celeste

Prologue

Written and drawn in 2016

When I started ‘Something about Celeste’ in 2001 and was trying to get syndicated, I always had Ƨɘlɘƨ in the back of my mind. But I felt that I need to have hundreds of comics strips first that established Celeste’s personality before I re-introduced Ƨɘlɘƨ. But I work very, very slowly and by 2006, I barely had over 200 comics.

When I restarted SaC as a webcomic in 2015, I decided this was a good time to bring back Ƨɘlɘƨ. If not now, when?

I liked the first Sunday comic with Ƨɘlɘƨ, but I wasn’t satisfied with the artwork in the dailies. I may go back and redrew them someday.

Part One

from 2016

In chapter one, I retell the same storyline that I told in 1999, but with better art. I was very satisfied how Ƨɘlɘƨ came out. She looked different than Celeste. She talked differently than Celeste. She felt like a very different character than Celeste. Not just a flipping of the image like I did in 1999. I decided to make Ƨɘlɘƨ a more re-occurring character in the line-up.

Part 2

2016

This was another fun storyline to write. I liked the idea of the nephew as a re-occurring character that becomes a stalker of both Celeste and Ƨɘlɘƨ. But unfortunately, I never came up with anymore ideas with the nephew.

Part 3

From 2017

This storyline I muddle up the rules of Celeste and Ƨɘlɘƨ. In the two previous stories, When Celeste is in the world; Ƨɘlɘƨ is in the mirror. And when Ƨɘlɘƨ is in the world; Celeste is stuck in the mirror. But in this story, both Ƨɘlɘƨ and Celeste are in the world. This is the first story that they interact in. I found new possibilities with these characters.

Part 4

from 2018

In this storyline, I have Celeste and Ƨɘlɘƨ sitting and chatting, instead of chasing each other. It was fun bouncing their different personalities off of each other. Now, Ƨɘlɘƨ felt like a reluctant roommate than just an evil mirror doppelganger.

Part 5

from 2019

This is like part 3, in which Ƨɘlɘƨ seduces Dave. But now that Celeste isn’t around to chase her off, Ƨɘlɘƨ can really toy around with Dave at the office.

Part 6

from 2021

I sometimes wonder if it was a mistake making Celeste a blonde all those many years ago. She is far hotter as a redhead.

Part 7

These are just random comics with Ƨɘlɘƨ. These further muddy the waters as to the nature of Ƨɘlɘƨ. Is she only a reflection, is she a succubus, is she murderously evil, is she the third roommate?
